THOUGHTS ON DESIGN

A little while ago the lovely Jen from Canadian creative agency smashLAB got in touch and was wondering if I would be interested in reading their creative director Eric Karjaluoto's latest book, The Design Method. My answer, was of course, and astounding "Heck yes", and then I proceeded to spend every minute on my daily commute with my nose in the book, completely ignorant of my fellow commuters. I really love learning as much as I can about design, and I love hearing about how other designers work, but I find so many design books really boring, really bossy or just not relevant. But this book I really liked. It covers Eric's workflow method step by step, which focuses on preventing costly and time consuming mistakes, helping you become a more efficient designer while pushing your creativity and problem solving skills. It gives great advice that every designer could use (think: creative block). Eric's writing style is great - he has a plain speaking, conversational style which is engaging, funny and straight to the point (no, he's not shy!), but he's not harsh or intimidating either. If you're on the lookout for a read that will help get your design practice a little more focused, a little more efficient and a little more effective - especially if you work in a studio or freelance - have a look at this one. You can buy the book here, here or here.

  1. Thanks for sharing! I agree that design books often seem a bit bossy so it's refreshing to see a new addition that is more engaging and conversational. Sounds like a great read, especially when a creative block creeps up!

  2. The book sounds really interesting - does it offer a lot of his personal perspective or is it more general?
